Question by LBTNG: What type of Gold American Eagle coins are best to put into a gold IRA?
I have decided to buy a gold IRA, but there is conflicting information given by different companies.

Some say to put Gold "proof" American Eagles in it, because they are more valuable than non-proof American Eagles. Others say that it is not worth it, because the coins, when in an IRA, are only valued based on the value of the metal itself, and not on the collectible value, so this is just a way for the salesman to make a better commission from you.

Does anyone know the real answer to this question?

The fees can be crazy on holding physical gold in an IRA, and many companies are no more than elaborate scams. If you want to own gold, buy the GLD ETF. GLD is the worlds second largest holder of physical gold, and its much much much cheaper to buy that than physical gold. If you still want physical gold buy bullion. Bullion does not have the collector value that coins have and as such your value won't fluctuate with the collector market, just the gold and currency markets. If you're not stuck on buying gold in your IRA, take a look at the bullion offered on ebay, thats a really cheap way to own physical gold and its easy to sell for cheap on ebay. I've done this myself, just be selective with what gold you buy, make sure its in a sealed pack and comes with a certificate from a reputable mine like Pamp Suisse.

Question by woodson532003: What is the best way to store American Eagle silver coins?

Best answer:

Answer by BD in NM
There are several good options. The key is to make sure whatever you use is inert and PVC free. The ANA store and Amos Supplies both have PVC free Safeflips which are fairly inexpensive and convenient. Airtight holders are a little more expensive but provide a pretty secure holder for your coins. If the coins are high end pieces you might consider getting the slabbed by one the major grading services such as PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

Your local coin dealer would most of the basic supplies otherwise just do a search on line for numismatic supplies.

Question by Nate: American Eagle Coins?
What is the difference between a American Eagle Silver Dollar Coin PROOF and a American Eagle Silver Dollar Coin Regular issue Uncirculated

2004

Best answer:

Answer by bbooptoon1959
the method of manufactor. Proof coins have the blanks and the dies highly polished before striking. When struck, this creates a highly reflective piece. The coin is then sandblasted on the high points creating a contrast with a frosted finish. The uncirculated is simply struck without polishing, and the burnished has some kind of matte-like finish. Proofs are generally more expensive

Question by Bobby: Why shouldn't I clean my coins? What will happen if I do or don't clean them? My Silver Eagles are tarnished!?
I have 10 American Silver Eagle coins from the years 2000-2005 and they all have varying degrees or tarnish on them. Some of them are perfect on the "face", but the back side is black!! I KNOW EVERYONE SAYS YOU SHOULDN'T CLEAN COINS, but I would like a more detailed explanation as to why I shouldn't remove the tarnish.

1) Why shouldn't I just clean them? I was thinking some tarnish remover would do the job, just a dip in some.

2) If I continue to let them tarnish, will they always look black and oddly colored, or will they go back to looking normal over time?

3) This is the most important question I have: How can I keep any new coins I add to my collection from tarnishing and/or oxidizing? Will air tight holders do the job?

I'm not asking to be a smartbleep, I just want answers! Detailed answers! Thanks for helping, should you choose to.

Question by vanbadiwal: What is a one ounce proof silver bullion American Eagle worth? I have 1986 and 1987 coins.?

Best answer:

Answer by greg b
Silver is at 20.10 an ounce

The Silver eagle market is around 22$ for a regular date - so thats the bear minimum.

All silver eagles are uncirculated so quality is prob not an issue for you, if they are still in their original case from the mint they are probably ms 67- to ms 69.

Both of your coins are around -40.

Hold onto them, silver will probably increase even more as the economy slumps.

Question by Dewayne: Is buying Gold, Platinum or Silver American Eagle Proof coins (US Mint) a good investment?
I imagine this would depend of the how the price of gold, platinum or silver does in the marketplace, but would there also be a collectors' interest even if the prices of metals took a downturn?

Basic way of making money:

Buy low, sell high.

Look at the current cost of gold and silver and compare it to the last 50 years. Is it low right now? If you're buying "high" then it's not a good investment.
