Is the gold a more dense metal? Or is is simply an optical illusion and the thickness is actually greater on the gold coin?

Yes, gold weighs more than silver. 1 oz. of silver would be bigger.

If we end up in a situation where bartering is the key to survival, there won't be much use for gold or silver. What will have value is guns, ammunition, water, food, and fuel. The very concept of barter implies that money (or precious metals) won't be used.

However, the chance of that kind of thing happening is very, very, small. I think what is more likely is the the US will suffer inflation and in that case precious metals will rise in value, so I would hold on to it.

I have old American Eagle Silver Dollar Coins, from the 1980's up to the 2000's. If you know where I can sell them around North Carolina, where I would get a good value for them, or if you have any information on these types of coins, it's all greatly appreciated! Thanks!

P.S- When I say North Carolina, i'm around Charlotte. So somewhere nearby would be ideal, but i'm willing to travel some too, if need-be. Thanks again!

With these two links you can search for local coin dealers and coin clubs with people who will help you. The value of silver American Eagle coins is based on the current spot price of silver though dealers will pay a bit less in order to make a profit.

Alright so I have some coins, and don't know the current value and don't feel like eBaying it so I have -

Pennies from (1944-46 were Shellcase Pennies) - 1925, 1938, 1944(x4), 1945(x3)

Silver Pennies (also known as Steel Cent) from - 1943(x4)

Silver Nickel from 1944

US 5 Cent Postage Stamp, Roosevelt with quote - "Freedom of speech and Religion from Want and Fear" (sort of random but I got it...)

An Alcatraz Coin (mostly just a souvenier)

Half Dollars from - 1971, 1979, 190, 1997, and 2000

Silver Dollars from - 1979(x2)

Gold Dollars from - 2000(x2)

Question by Verity: Does a 1986 American Eagle Silver Dollar increase in value as time goes on? ?
Someone offered me for a proof 1986 American Eagle silver dollar that I own, mint in velvet box with certificate of authenticity. I've been doing my home work on this and they usually sell for around that price, I think it's fair. What I'm wondering is, is it worth selling now for or would it increase in value as time goes on?

For that matter, does any one know if the same applies for an 1883 Morgan Dollar?

In proof, book value for a 1986 Silver Eagle is . Now if you are selling one to a dealer you will never get and if you are buying one you will probably pay a bit less than that. Generally these do increase in value over time, but except for certain rare issues, coins in general are a bad investment compaired to the stock market (ironic right now, but true!) The worst you will ever do with these is slightly less than bullion value, they are in fact bullion. Silver is currently a bit under an ounce. If you want the money, go ahead and sell, but if you really don't want to sell you probably will come out a bit ahead in the long run by holding it. Morgans tend to trend upward, I would think a bit better than Silver Eagles. 1883 is not a very rare year (unless you have it in proof) but they are not making more of these.

I think BU stands for bullion? Silver Proof is more expensive than Silver BU. I think Proof (999) Silver is pure silver? Sterling Silver is 925 silver. Appreciate any inputs.

BU is an abbreviation for 'bright uncirculated'. It is applied most often to coins struck for circulation that do not have special methods of striking or special handling.

Proof is a special method of striking a coin that may involve several blows from a specially prepared planchet. Proof coins are generally not circulated and are sold only to collectors. See:

Since Bright Uncirculated and Proof refer to the method of striking the coin by the mint, they have nothing to do with the silver content. A proof coin can have any amount of silver, or none at all.

You will have to refer to the specifications on the specific coin to know the difference in silver content between a BU coin and a Proof of the same coin. It is not unusual for a coin to have a higher silver content for a Proof version than a circulating BU, but it is not always true.
