Question by Mr. So Krates: Which is a better coin to own?
Which would you rather have? This is a gift for my mother who loves coin collecting.
A 2008 bald eagle silver dollar proof: Only ~, but only 500,000 are to be produced
A 2008 American buffalo proof gold coin (1/10 ounce): ~0 but no statement of limiting the production
Both are official U.S. coins from the U.S. mint.
Best answer:
Answer by Kitty I personally would want the Gold Buffalo simply because I have numerous Silver Eagles already... BUT if your mother is a small time collector or beginner, she will be more than happy with the Silver Eagle .
Why not get her the Silver Eagle now and start saving for the Gold Buffalo for a gift NEXT year ! It's a win win situation for both of you. If you are financially stable and money is NOT the object then get one now and the next for her at the next gift giving holiday of your choice.
Either way she will love what you give her... I know I enjoy ANYTHING my son gives me, even if it is a coin I already have. I gladly accept duplicates of any part of my collection. : )
Be sure to include a hug !!

Question by LBTNG: What type of Gold American Eagle coins are best to put into a gold IRA?
I have decided to buy a gold IRA, but there is conflicting information given by different companies.
Some say to put Gold "proof" American Eagles in it, because they are more valuable than non-proof American Eagles. Others say that it is not worth it, because the coins, when in an IRA, are only valued based on the value of the metal itself, and not on the collectible value, so this is just a way for the salesman to make a better commission from you.
Does anyone know the real answer to this question?
Best answer:
Answer by dmatt The fees can be crazy on holding physical gold in an IRA, and many companies are no more than elaborate scams. If you want to own gold, buy the GLD ETF. GLD is the worlds second largest holder of physical gold, and its much much much cheaper to buy that than physical gold. If you still want physical gold buy bullion. Bullion does not have the collector value that coins have and as such your value won't fluctuate with the collector market, just the gold and currency markets. If you're not stuck on buying gold in your IRA, take a look at the bullion offered on ebay, thats a really cheap way to own physical gold and its easy to sell for cheap on ebay. I've done this myself, just be selective with what gold you buy, make sure its in a sealed pack and comes with a certificate from a reputable mine like Pamp Suisse.

Question by Chi L: Are american silver eagles an ok investment?
Are american silver eagles an ok investment? I also like the idea of collecting coins so are there any old silver coins that wouldn't run too much above the spot price of silver?
Best answer:
Answer by BenGraham The worst investment is anything Cash. Since the silver eagle coin is cash, it does not make for a good investment.

Answer by Taiping The 2008 bald eagle coin is a commemorative coin while the 2008 American Buffalo coin is a gold bullion coin and for 0 it must be the 1/10 of an ounce. You may find that the gold buffalo will have the lowest mintage. Looking at the American gold eagle proof issues of 1/10 oz. only 17,546 2005 proofs were made and 15,636 2004 proofs were made. The most proofs made from what books I have is 143,681 from the first year 1988. Not all mintage figures for 2006-2007 have been released yet. I am a numismatist and collect the old historic coins, so would have to take the Bald Eagle for it's historic value but the gold coin would be the best investment.

Best answer:
Answer by Judy Coins - easy to buy - hard to sell.
My dad got involved with coins.
You can never sell them for anywhere close to what you buy them for.
But to him - they were a hobby.
Go on ebay and check out if you see something similar.

Question by MT: Why did the US Mint stop making gold and silver eagles for 2009?
I was checking the US Mint website and learned that they most likely won't be selling any Gold or Silver eagle coins because of the demand. Are they planning on minting the Gold and Silver eagle coins in sufficient quantities for collectors anytime soon? Will they be available next year?
Best answer:
Answer by liberty911 There is a link at this webpage which shows the 2009 American Eagle mintage which might be lower than most years. These are always available for a limited time, and I believe the time has expired for 2009. You should be able to find these from many coin dealers but at a premium price. Good luck.
