Coins - easy to buy - hard to sell.
My dad got involved with coins.
You can never sell them for anywhere close to what you buy them for.
But to him - they were a hobby.

Go on ebay and check out if you see something similar.

Question by MT: Why did the US Mint stop making gold and silver eagles for 2009?
I was checking the US Mint website and learned that they most likely won't be selling any Gold or Silver eagle coins because of the demand. Are they planning on minting the Gold and Silver eagle coins in sufficient quantities for collectors anytime soon? Will they be available next year?

Answer by liberty911
There is a link at this webpage which shows the 2009 American Eagle mintage which might be lower than most years. These are always available for a limited time, and I believe the time has expired for 2009. You should be able to find these from many coin dealers but at a premium price. Good luck.

Question by grmike28: is trading gold in for silver a wise thing to do today?
at a local bullion dealer I traded in a gold sovereign (about a quarter ounce) for 3 silver maple leafs and 8 silver eagle walking liberties in unc condition. I don't think the world economy or currency prices will be stable ever again until the whole system changes (including removing the USD as the world's reserve currency). In the past the gold to silver ratio was lowest during bad economic times reaching as low as 14 during the 20th century a couple times and averaging 17 for most of history before the 20th century. What do you think?
"No gold is worth more"
that's obvious but how much more is the question? is it worth 50 times more like it is now or 20 times more which is closer to the historic ratio?
"I would not have traded in your Sovereign for the silver you did."
I wasn't ripped off. 1/4 ounce of gold is worth 327 dollars at today's close (December 27, 2010).
The walking liberties are silver eagles I said that. They sell for an average of 34-40 dollars each on ebay. They are unc condition and range in dates from 1991 to 2005. I could have gotten more maple leafs if I wanted but I preferred the silver eagles. Some of the maple leafs are still in the package from the royal canadian mint. I got 11 ounces of silver and not just any bullion personally selected dates that I know command premiums, for 1 quarter ounce of gold. 11 ounces of silver = 330, 1/4 ounce of gold = 327.
the commission wasn't a big deal. I've been going to the coin dealer for years he has a significant amount of bullion. In the exchange he gave me over 90% of the value of the gold coin and didn't charge a premium on the silver (under 33 dollars for each silver ounce which includes maple leafs).
I don't own a lot of gold but I think silver is a lot more undervalued than gold. When times are great (like most of the last couple decades) gold is still worth a lot because it has high demand in jewellery, silver is taken for granted. In times when people want commodities silver rises a lot more than gold (70% versus 30% last year).
"Removing the USD as the world's reserve currency?"

http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-49758120100629

China and Russia 2 of the BRIC countries got rid of the US dollar in November 2010 for bilateral trade. India has also attacked the dollar as well as OPEC. Having the reserve currency has helped the US a lot, it's the reason why oil is cheapest there than anywhere else in the world and has allowed them to print as much money as they want something many other countries aren't free to do. When commodities demand is large enough to push gold to 5000 or more per ounce silver should be over 250. The only time silver is very low is when gold is under 1500 or 2000 an ounce.

Question by eReedsburg: which silver coin is better to buy - an American Eagle or Buffalo Round?
I have the option to buy either 20 2010 American Eagle .999 silver coins for 6 or 20 .999 silver Buffalo Rounds for 8. Which is the better investment?

Both are made out of the same amount of silver, but the American Eagle has a date and other stuff on it that the Buffalo Round doesn't. Does that make it worth more?

Best answer:

Answer by Taiping
The American silver eagle is a coin, the buffalo round is not. The Buffalo round is considered just that a silver round and actually falls into the medal class, it is not legal tender, nor is it backed by a government. Its value is the silver only. The American silver eagle on the other hand is a coin and also has a collector value added to its silver value. That is why it is more money. So the silver eagle would be the better choice. So now you know the facts it is up to you.

To put it simply, your collection is worth whatever someone will give you for it. There is some lower limit, just because there are precious metals involved.

Gold is currently worth 0/troy ounce. Your 5 dollar gold piece is worth over 0 just for the gold content. Hint: gold prices are expected to continue to rise due to inflation.

Your "silver" coins are not all pure silver. depending on the year and denomination, they may be 90% or even 75% silver. Silver is worth roughly /troy ounce.

The other things are of interest only to collectors, so I cannot estimate their value. You could look at similar offerings on E-bay or visit a coin shop.

Question by woodson532003: What is the best way to store American Eagle silver coins?

Best answer:

Answer by BD in NM
There are several good options. The key is to make sure whatever you use is inert and PVC free. The ANA store and Amos Supplies both have PVC free Safeflips which are fairly inexpensive and convenient. Airtight holders are a little more expensive but provide a pretty secure holder for your coins. If the coins are high end pieces you might consider getting the slabbed by one the major grading services such as PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

Your local coin dealer would most of the basic supplies otherwise just do a search on line for numismatic supplies.

Question by Alan R: Where can I buy an official blue satin lined presentation case for an American Eagle silver dollar?
I bought the coin off ebay but it did not come with a presentation case, and the mint doesn't seem to offer those for sale separately. If I can't get an official case, what are my alternatives? This is for my second son, and I'd really like them both to have the same type of case.

Best answer:

Answer by BD in NM
You could do a search for numismatic supplies. One site that has a lot of supplies is Amos Advantage. Maybe you could buy two boxes from the same source that way they would both be the same.

Happy hunting
